Another fine American Currents showed up in my mailbox Friday.

Olaf's work with full color and layout makes it very attractive.  Very professional for a bunch of unpaid volunteers.  Thank you.  American Currents is our flagship.
I enjoyed remembering Bob Hrabik's excellent NANFA Missouri Convention.  What a great time i and Cyan had wandering the region.  I think i am only up to the talks day on my forum accounting.  Much more happened afterwards but i am unsure if i will continue the story due to seemingly lack of response on the forum.  Thanks to Jenny for writing a summary on the day's speakers.  I especially enjoyed Scott Smith's photographic techniques work.
I always enjoy seeing Tyler's hand shots of beautiful Darters. He does have a skilled gift with that simple technique.  Vibrant, electric males on full display.  Tyler knows fish like few others.
I regret not getting to camp with the Noah tribe.  They had a lot of fun in my favorite waters except they missed the best by not poking their heads under.  :)  Unfortunately my Spring was heavily scheduled with snorkeling activities and trips and i could not break previous commitments.  Maybe the WI cheese heads will return.  I invite any other groups that want to get down this way.  Ive spent time with many varied groups over the years.  I most enjoy reading of these trip accounts and various adventures.
Additional fine reading was provided... Apache Trout, Don Orth, KY's Relict Darters and NANFA News and Riffles.

Good job editors and contributors.  Thanks to our advertisers too.  If your not a member become one.  Support NANFA.

Christmas and the gift giving seasosn is fast approaching and i urge my fellow NANFA Fishheads to consider purchasing NANFA products as gifts for your family and friends.  They can be t-shirts or hats or Big Muddy playing cards, NANFA decals & patches ( which make for excellent small stocking stuffers ).
Here is a link to the NANFA store...

Casper - I really hope that you continue sharing your experiences.   Although I haven't provided the feedback that I should have, your stories have definitely helped me imagine what it would have been like to be there in person (which unfortunately I wasn't) and provided the encouragement for me to continue to figure out how to make it to future NANFA events outside of my own area.  Your stories, both on the forum and in the American Currents, are always very enjoyable so please keep sharing and I will try to be more verbal with my appreciation.

Thanks for the encouragement, Casper. We do appreciate it. I am the smallest and weakest link in the chain, but I do agree AC is a really good publication, volunteer-run or not. For those not familiar, I would point out though, that AC might be volunteer driven, most of the volunteers are professionals in fish related and/or publishing fields. (Me being the only exception that comes to mind...)

I also agree that this past issue was a particularly good one.

I'm pretty proud of what we've accomplished with AC, and I have high hopes that it will continue to grow and improve with each issue.

What is required, however, is for members (and acquaintances recruited by members) to keep providing us with the articles, photos, art, and other content that really makes it great. Show us what you've got!

So: if you hear of some interesting research on native fishes, consider contacting the researcher(s) or asking Fritz or Konrad to do so. If you meet someone in the native fish field--and I include in this not only scientists, but also fishing guides, artists, writers, photographers, activists, and anyone else with interesting experiences with or perspectives on native fishes. There is also the great--and largely untapped--world of undergrad and graduate students who are full of wonder and energy for the field and need practice writing for publication.

I have a hunch that many scientists doing fish-related research probably also have side interests and projects that they'd be happy to share in a relatively small scale publication like AC, even if their main work is destined for mainstream journals.

Get out there, NANFans, and find us more content.

AND: sit down and write that thing you've had in the back of your mind. Draw that picture. Find those photos you took. What are you waiting for?
