This is my first forum post and I am hopeful that someone can be of assistance. I am having a difficult time distinguishing between mummichogs (F. heteroclitis) and striped killifish (F.majalis). I have some pics that were taken in the feeder creek/stream at Old Silver Beach in Falmouth, MA this fall. It may be called Herring Brook, but I could be wrong? I've tried a few sites and the pics are all over the road and I'm not even sue if their ranges overlap, as I've seen conflicting info about that too. Can someone help me out with an ID? Thanks in advance, Jeff

Striped killies should have a longer, flatter head than these fish, and at least some of them should show horizontal stripes.  Basded on that, I'd guess these are mummichogs.

To add to what Gerald said, here are some F majalis photographs. They are pretty distinct in both appearance and behavior. I've never seen F majalis in deeper water than 3 inches for example.

That's excellent info guys and I appreciate it greatly. I've attached a pic of a group of similar fish, photographed in a bay on Martha's Vineyard. These look to be Striped Killifish... would you agree? Thx in advance, Jeff

The one in the back is for certain, so probably all three are striped killies.

Not sure if you frequent, all of the various species forums, but I posted another query in the "other" category. If you know your Menhadens and/or shads, would you consider taking a peek? Thx, Jeff
