I have noticed my spotfins doing a bit more splishing and splashing than usual and I see the one kind of corral the smaller one towards the top of the tank. The bigger one tends to roll over on his side and get either overtop or below the smaller one and then "dance" for a second or two. Never had fish go into what to me appears to be courtship in a tank before. Is this typically how they behave in courtship or is this something else?

TIA

They are crevice spawners so they need something to deposit their eggs into such as a stack of flower pots.

Nice! Agree with Michifish. My Greenfins went through the motions using creases in rocks and drift wood. No fry but fascinating to watch. Maybe they're trying to use that rim on the tank as a crevice.

Yep, what they both said... looks like spawning... not too uncommon for Cyprinella to go into spawning behaviors in a tank.  It is weird for them to go to the surface.  A couple of tiles or flower pots or plates or flat rocks would keep them down in the water column and let you see a more natural behavior..

Thank you for the info everyone. I thought that it was spawning behavior, but I really don't know what conditions are needed to induce spawning. Not that the fry would survive anyway with the darters and N longear in the tank.

Thanks again

Chris
