My 9 green sunfish just passed and I decided to do a quick dissection to see if there was anything strange. I did find a small piece of gravel in the stomach. Not sure that would have killed it. It had other symptoms. Anyway can anyone tell if these are ovaries or testes?

By the way I plan to bury my little friend after we are done learning something. I don’t want to upset anyone here.

Gonads definitely be on the upper size of what I expect to be during peak of breeding season for a male.  I assume the fish was kept under natural photoperiod and temperature regimen so past peak.  Generally testis closer to white and too unaided eye will not show any sort of granulation.  Example posted appears yellowish and I can see granulation when image clicked on to expand.  Ovaries generally have a more rounded appearance while testis are closer to flat on side in contact with other organs.  I think you are looking at a female.

I normally have a dissecting microscope close by to look closer at a gonad that is teased apart.
