I'll be going up to Springfield in a couple weeks for a cigar gathering (another hobby of mine.....see Clubstogie.com) and was wondering if there are any cool places to check out. I'm just looking for streams to trudge in or lakes/ponds to fish, etc. I'll be staying just North of Springfield near I-55 in Sherman IL.

I live in Springfield. Lake Springfield has some of the best catfishing in the state. The bass at lake Springfield while seldom over 5 lbs are fat as footballs and very sassy too. The Sangamon river runs near Sherman. just head towards Springfield on business 55 and oyu will cross the sangamon. Right after that you will see Riverside park which should give you good access to the river. I haven't fished it in years though. Sangchris lake is about 15 miles southeast of Springfield and has excellent crappie and bass fishing. The state record striper came from Sangchris as well. AS far as collecting natives I am very new to collecting native so I am afraid I am not much help there.
Hope this helps!
and isn't too late...\

Most interesting thing I've done in that area was Sugar Creek (trib. to Salt Creek, which runs into the Sangamon River). The site we did was 5 miles northwest of the town of Lincoln, IL. It was your usual pool-riffle-pool-riffle habitat. Sand substrate with some gravel and glacial till substrate. Nice Smallmouth Bass fishing if that's what you're into. Here's what we got there that was much interesting (that would be catchable in a seine);
Red Shiner (very abundant)
Steelcolor Shiner (also abundant)
Bullhead Minnow
Suckermouth Minnow (lots of really big ones)
Bigmouth Shiner
Freckled Madtom
Shortnose Gar

We got 35 species of fish there in total...the other stuff was pretty normal though.
