No doubt true..but on DHL's website, they say the same thing..NO live animals...

Hmmm. Going to have to check into that. MAMBM (Me And My Big Mouth)!!!

You are indeed allowed to ship certain live animals by postal service. This includes fish, day-old chicks, and most insects, among others. This is outlined in USPS publicaton 52, under "perishable" items. I have a copy in my glove box in case it is needed.

Brian, I pulled DHL's terms and conditions for domestic freight off of their site, and included it here. Read part 2, second section. It lists a number of items you can't ship. From what I can tell, all the private carriers have this sort of qualification..thus, we can't write "live fish" on the box!

Well, no arrival today.
Once I have the tracking no. from Tom, I will be having a very in-depth conversation with whoever is highest up the pecking order in the USPS, that I can get on the phone.
Tom mentioned something else, I've had problems with 3 different individuals(not a good way to word it..I mean that I've had issues with the post office, but involving 3 different destinations). All, however, were routed through Detroit. I DO have the packages sent to my place of work, Gander Mountain..so I am wondering deep down if there is maybe and animal rights activist, or anti-gun person working that sees the destination, and loses or destroys the package due to that. Hate to think that may be it..but I'm at a complete loss as to other possibilities at this point. Everyone else seems to do ok..so I don't know what else it could be, other then pure bad luck(possible I suppose..but the odds are getting long).

Another little tidbit to add. Where I live (city of around 70,000) you cannot even get ahold of the USPS by phone. No number is even listed. And, for what it's worth, I only rarely get anything sent to me priority mail that arrives in less than five days.

Rick the phone number this is the same everyplace. You have to work to get a phone number. The way I got it was simply to go to my local post office, and ask for their local number. After a great deal of gnashing of teeth...they gave it to me. NOW...all I do is call them first, ask to speak to whoever is on duty in charge..and let them know I need the number to the LOCAL post office in whatever city or town I am trying to reach.
Alternatively, you CAN get a "real person" on the line at the main 800 number..but it does not tell you HOW to do it. I found out by trial and error that you simply hit zero at every prompt..eventually, it defaults to an operator, and you can then request the number you want.

Just needed to vent about USPS and this thread looks about right. I sent some fish to fshlvr on Monday via priority mail and they still haven't arrived as of this morning. I had delivery confirmation added to the box in order to track it. Well, customer service (after being somewhat rude) informed me that they sometimes scan packages, but it's not required. So sometimes you can use the number to track, sometimes you can't, I guess you just have to hope it goes through a motivated post office! I am NEVER shipping USPS again and am going to do everything I can to not send regular mail either. No more stamps!!

Tell them that they shouldn't offer the service if they aren't going to hold up their end. You should get what you pay for. You paid for confirmation, and you should get it. Ask them for a refund.

Will USPS refund my money?
It has been 8 days now and no fish, so they are probably dead. If I wanted them dead, I could have done it myself for free instead of the $20+ shipping.

I "think" after 5 business days, you can get a refund from usps.
I will tell you that while I'll of course honor any requests for fish I send out...in the end, I really hope people I send fish to will consider going with at LEAST express USPS, and private carrier is even better(just dont' put "live fish" on the box;) ).
Last time I did it, I used Fedex, and it was VERY efficient and there in two days, just as I paid for.
Fedex 2 or 3 day is no more then USPS next day..and likely as not, get there just as quick from what I can see!

I'd be surprised if you got a refund from the USPS. I tried to get one once after they delayed delivery and the fish died. They pretty-much laughed in my face. I said, "Why do you call it guaranteed delivery if you don't guarantee it?". They just shrugged and told me that I wasn't going to get my money back. That's when I stopped using the USPS to send live fish.

Unbelievable!! The pickerel I sent showed up today, 9 days after it was sent, and it's still alive. The box it was sent in was all beat up, but he made the trip!

You used Breather Bags, I assume? Those things are the best!

Actually I ran out of breather bags, so I used the bags I had leftover from getting feeders from the LFS. I usually use them for shipping plants. I got REALLY lucky!
