I would say that's bantam or bluegill because of the dorsal spot. Doesn't really look right for bluegill though, so I'm gonna say that's bantam.

Thanks the lake is loaded with these suns they will even strike at much bigger lures. They are breeding now so wont fish it for couple months.

I was there yesterday taking pics of HUGE softshell turtles but only shadows, rough outlines came out so will try it again. I feed the sunfish as want them to have a good breeding season throw in few scoops of ground up dog food and ground corn Mon to Fri as its by my house and after work stop by for a second.

Its a good lake as area I go is a pain to acess and no one fishes it . There are some big Black bass though have never caught any .

The fish is a coppernose bluegill. Blotching pattern on sides characteristic of female. Can you photograph fish on nest? While fish are spawning?

I have pictures of them nesting I just sent them to my email to download them see how they look as some of the pics I took arent worth posting .

If good will post it tommorrow probably post it anyway lol but will go back and get better pics. I take them with cell phone but think just better to use comp camera as most of the pics are "grainy"

I was actually taking pics of cichlids Brichardi (I had cichlids yrs ago those I know) but the sunfish in background are in pic

This pic shows 2 suns on left hand side over nest but its a bad pic as only shows 2 suns. The "blotch" in the middle as soon as weeds end is a big soft shell turtle but due to movement it didnt come out. I have few pics of it but they didnt come out when I enlarge it I can see the head which still makes it worthless picture .
I wil get more pics and good pics this week as its easy enough

Those are bluegill then. The vertical bars looked more bantam to me, but I guess I was wrong.

Bottom of this pic left hand side you can see the shadows of several sunfish again this is same day same pics but different angle . The bigger suns breed by the rocky area the smaller different colored suns breed by the "water weeds" . The sunfish there are different looking so you could be correct.

I have also caught what I am positive are longears as very pretty .

again soon I will get way better clearer pics probably this weekend. My wife and I recently learned how to take/post pics lol took us long enough . The lakes here are all fed by canals so fish arent locked into any particular lake. I have seen brichardi cichlids by the right hand side canal that runs through the forest .

Those are definitely bluegill, besides it looks like you are in NY no where near the range of bantam Sunfish.

Yep, I just noticed it says moved from NY not in NY. Oh well, still out of the range of bantams they are further west.

No the brood I certainly cant see imagine none yet . I see what I think are the males in cleared out sand pit granted some large rocks around it .
The other suns in the weeds look like pairs but nothing at all as far as actual egg or fry that I can actually see . I intend to go back take clear good pics unlike the pics I posted as was trying to get pics of softshell turtles, etc which didnt pan out and this fish were just background shadows

Can you walk out to nest with siphon or turkey bastor without getting gator bit? Could detect embryos/prolarvae.

like pairs but nothing at all as far as actual egg or fry that I can actually see .

They will not form pairs like many substrate spawning cichlids, rather will be single fathers with kids from multiple mates.
