Hi all, I'm Nick from Ithaca, NY. I'm an active birder, herper, naturalist, evolutionary biologist, and various other names. My focus has always been birds and herps, but fish have had their place too. In particular, I'm a big fan of darters, catfish, and 'ancient fishes'. I was inspired to join this forum after doing fieldwork on rough-winged swallows along some local creeks last week, and seeing various spawning fish, including a really nice Common Shiner and a big Tessellated Darter that I borrowed from a Northern Watersnake that wanted to eat it. Oh and spawning Sea Lamprey too. I don't keep any fish (just geckos) and I won't have the capacity to for a few years, but I'll get to posting photos of all my field experiences soon.

Cheers,
Nick

Welcome to the forum, its nice to have a local member. I don't live in Ithaca but I'm about 45 minutes north. If you want to know about any local fish collecting (or birding, I do that also) spots just let me know.

Super cool. Did the darter survive getting chomped by the water snake? What do you mean by ancient fish? Lungfish?
We have pirate perch, here on Long Island. Their pretty funky, probably right up your alley. If you ever come downstate let me know, and we'll see if we can
observe some!

I'm checking in as another New Yorker - from Long Island.
Anyone among NY NANFA members do any field trips?
