Looks like the rest of the week will be dry allowing us to sample medium rivers soon. I wanted to post here and just keep my fingers crossed for good water levels. The Kankakee is most logical choice at this time for colored fish as well as water levels. If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears. Please post here if you're interested.

If we do decide to sample the Kankakee, NANFA will have cleaning equipment on site so all gear will be sanitized before we leave the site. If you don't want your sampling equipment sanitized, please don't bring it along. We discovered zebra mussels on our last visit and VHS is heavy on my mind as well.

Why don't you try out the Mazon River?

Mark and I sampled a section of the Mazon this spring. Limited access for the "good sites". I think we found the site you visited. Very different part of the river than sections I've previously sampled.

Uland. glad to see you promoting the decon procedure. We need to talk about and promote it more. Didymo was recently found in the Elk in WV. A new state a month it seems. Now VHS outside of the Great Lakes. A little bleach mixture and some fresh water for rinse only takes about 30 minutes of your time but goes a long way. Do you decon prior to entering a waterway, especially if someone brings in some equipment or felt and they've been somewhere in the last 48 hours?

Sorry to quote myself but that didn't come out right. I should add that I have a great many nets (enough to keep 10-12 people busy) and I'm always happy to use the nets with partners. If you're concerned about bleaching your net, I have plenty I'm willing to put through the decon process.

Did the trip show any River Redhorse?

Unfortunately it did not. It was still "spring high" water which reduced our mobility. Actually the launch site was the most disappointing site we visited that day. It was too early to sample such large water. We sampled smaller streams the rest of the day.

I was up in Antioch. We got rain early early Sat. morning and again late on Saturday night. Most of Friday was clear and Sunday too.

So you guys didn't go out at all huh? I was going to try to head out to the vermillion tomorrow. Do you think the water is gonna be too high?

Our local creeks have been deluged since Friday. I took off Friday afternoon and played in the water with the kids until the rains came.
The Vermilion is pushing about twice the volume it usually should be at this time of year but it's usually pretty low. I would guess you can cross the riffles but the water clarity should be pretty bad.
