Uland I don't have my map with me but I think it was bay creek. I don't remember exactly but if bay creeks that mud hole just west of the swamp that's our guy. I think Blake and I were complaining about this place to you before. You know how we don't like mud

Lance,

Bay Creek is that mudhole and yeah the bottom is a bit soft but not as bad as you might think. I'm not certain it's a longear but that would be my guess.
Don't like the mud??? Man, I'll have to take you guys on a southern Illinois soft bottom tour. I love the mud!

No I don't like mud! Those slant banks are treacherous down there. I fell more times that day than I think I have in the past 5 years. I felt cleaner wet wading through duck weed in the swamp. We did get some interesting stuff. Next time you're going down that way let us know I'll bring my ice pick and repelling rope so I don't accidentally end up using my back as a toboggan again

Thanks for the compliments everyone.
I'm sure it will. Make sure you plan it somehow with whatever you're looking for. I chose java fern because I hate getting wet all the time. You tie them up and walk away. A 90 gallon should be fun for you. The more real estate you have to play with the more creative you can get. Make sure you show us!
It's just a single bulb fluorescent fixture that came with it for now. It's not a bright tank. I'm debating on getting a compact fixture just the price tag is killing me.

On that note i tell you somthing i dont like... I was in mid illinois in a creek with a sand bottom, the water was low, i walked up on the bank on what i thought was a solid sand bank, and about 2 steps in i went in up to my knee, over the top of my boots , i just fell forward out flat and was able to pull myself out with my hands. I dont know if this was quick sand but it was as close as i ever want to come to it. I was by myself (bad idea). The boot is still in there, and im pretty sure i said a really bad word when i went in. PLEASE folks be careful, and if you can help it dont go alone.

It's a banded sculpin I brought back from tn last year. Very neat fish.
Mudminnows are worth it, they're not lookers but their activities amongst themselves and how they handle things is quite spectacular to watch.

Well, ill tell you what.. im sure i can find a tank full of somthing for one of those guys to eat for me, what a kewl fish, Do you know of anyone who sells those?? or would be able to trade to me for something. I know i can get the mudminnows

Oh yeah...I'll have to show you where to access that creek. There is an easy way. I need help since I found a few species not yet recorded from that creek and didn't know what I'd found. I should get a photo record.

It sure looks like a redear sunfish to me. I can't quite make out the pectoral fins, but very long and more pointed is a good indicator. Also the small, protruding, slightly bulbous mouth, similar to an orangespot says "redear" to me.
Does he hunt around and stare down at spots in the gravel while holding his head dead still for 5-10 seconds at a time?
Are all of your snails gone?
I've had some in tanks in the past and they seemed very peaceful community fish, right up there with bantams and the enneacanthus species.

The only problem with this are the blue marking on its opercal, which Redears do not have.

I still think the possibilities are leaning towards the longear and pseed direction.

Purchased a new light fixture last week. Got a pretty good deal on a used dual T-5 fixture. I thought I'd need a dual given how dull the single T-8 was but just one T-5 gives me more than enough light. Now my camera can see my fish and so can you 8-)
