Hello,
I have a 1/2 acre pond that is recently dug and is about 8 feet deep average. I would like to stock a few paddlefish. Does anyone know of a paddlefish supplier? Also I understand that paddlefish eat plankton so would I need an established pond or how would i set a pond up for this species?
Thanks
Chuck

You may not be able to get true ownership.

I doubt very seriously if a 1/2 acer pond could provide enough plankton or small fishes for even one paddle fish much less several. They would have to be fed. Of course paddle-fish do indeed eat fish feed and can be raised that way.

I agree about pond size if your are reliant upon plankton. Improvement in paddlefish carrying capacity could be realized by exclusion of other plankton consuming species, pretty much all species and use fertilizers.

They can also be grown on pellets.

I am guessing you want to see the fish?

I know Kentucky State University is working with the City of Frankfort in raising paddlefish at the sewer facilities(or was last year) but I dont know how close you are to KY, but it might be worth looking into. I am not sure what there actual intentions are with them, but I assume its to restock the KY river and/or to sell to fish farms. They are collecting eggs or fry size and raising them to a healthy juvenile stage from what I can remember.

Forget about paddlefish unless you are willing to dig out your pond to 10 times that size. Of the many lakes we have stocked with sustainable paddlefish, less than 5% of the owners have seen their fish after four years. Nice to know they're in there, though.
