Really excellent shots! How much processing did you do on the images? They look like saturation and contrast have been bumped, but could just be really colorful fish in very clear water.

I used to be a total purist and never did any digital adjustments to my photos. Now I've decided that I'm fine with anything that makes the image appear more as it did to my eye at the time I took it -- but enhancing it beyond that still feels like "cheating". :)

Thanks Jase. I have to process every photo I take since I shoot in raw mode... To get good underwater photographs you have to start with clear water – there’s no way to process around that. Proper camera white balance is very important for getting good colors, and underwater photos generally do require a higher contrast setting than land photos.

In my opinion the whole “digital image editing is cheating” type of argument is unfounded. I won’t get into all of it here, but no photograph is completely objective. All photographs are imperfect representations of reality. My goal is to produce an image that best represents what I saw and best communicates my intended message. I will certainly use any tool (including photo processing software) that allows me to do that better.

Fantastic shots. I've been wanting to get into this myself and if I can find a good housing for my DVX I'd really like to do some video one of these days.

Real men shoot in RAW. :)

I have to agree with your comments Isaac, especially when shooting through water, it's a different medium or an additional medium to shoot through, which requires contrast to adjust. You just don't get the clarity in water that you do in air.... I love RAW because it allows me to actually choose the white balance that matches the appropriate shooting conditions without having to do it right before the fishes flare their fins!

Great photos by the way, the best underwater photos I have seen to date. I prefer the phototank method with the black background, but I love a good underwater shot. I snorkeled the Buffalo River in Arkansas this past summer and have to say it is a wonderfully clear river with spectacular diversity.

Keep the photos coming!

Blake

Thanks Blake. I agree that the ability to select your white balance in post processing is probably the biggest advantage to shooting in RAW.

I like how underwater photographs can tell you something about a fish’s place in its natural environment. Phototank shots are definitely better for identification purposes and just showing off a fish, though. I’ve used a phototank a few times, but I haven’t perfected it like some have on this forum.

Yeah, for me it doesn’t get much better than a canoeing/snorkeling trip down the Buffalo River.
