based on todays internet research. i believe i have cuaght a 4 inch mud minnow. it kinda looks like a minnie bowfin. was thinking this might make a good addition to my native aquarium. was wondering if there are any particulars i need to know about it, or if it would do well. thanks in advance.

You can search our site here, there have been some threads about mudminnows... your description sounds about right to me... many people say that they behave much like small pike... ambush hunting behaviour... but many people do keep them in community tanks. Without knowing all your other tank inhabitants we can't say much more... but do read up on them here on the site and I think you will find out the kinds of thigns that can help you be successful with keeping mudminnows.

I have 2 Eastern Mudminnows in my 75 gallon tank and they are probably mine and my wife's favorite fish in the tank(aside from the crayfish). They never move fast until it's time to eat. They do act a lot like pickerel when they go after food. I always try and get some super small feeders for them to go after.

Mudminnows are not very good competitors for food against faster fish like shiners and chubs, so watch and make sure your mudminnow is getting enough. They like meaty foods, especially earthworms, blackworms, insects, shrimp. They might adapt to dry foods eventually (flakes, pellets): some do, some don't.

Mine eat cichlid pellets and leftover bloodworms and mysis from my Pumpkinseeds. They are pretty chill, but I had one a while ago that would cram two fathead minnows- each half his size into his mouth at a time and sit there with a tail sticking out of his mouth for an hour or more.
