Hi there,

I have a few questions that I'm hoping someone can answer. I'd like to if possible obtain some Grass Pickerel for a aquarium at home and I'm just wondering if I can do this and if I can how would I go about it in a legal manner? Is it possible for me to catch them and as long as I abide by the daily catch limit? I'm not sure if I can even catch and keep Grass Pickerel. If that is not an option how would I go about obtaining them in a legal manner? Is it possible to import them from breeders in the US? Or if possible a fishery or something in Canada. Oh by the way I like in Ontario, Canada.

Hopefully someone can answer some of my questions.

Thanks!

You will need a special permit to catch it yourself. It is illegal to transport live fish unless they are on the Ontario Baitfish Primer. A far as getting one from a breeder I'm unsure of the laws. My sister lives in Ottawa she is going to U of O. Also; welcome to the forum!! Great to have more Canadians Ontarians here!! If you have any qustions just ask!

you need a special permit because grass pickerel are of special concern in ontario. I know sach's aquaculture sells them and will ship to canada(from florida), but thats rather expensive. You may want to try going into quebec and getting one and returning, because theres pretty much no way your going to be able to get the permit to collect and transport the fish from ontario waters just for aquarium purposes (believe me i tried with pumpkinseeds). I suggest googling the quebec regulations and see if anything in there will help. I'd ask the mnr though if you can get away with taking a fish from quebec and returning with it back into ontario. my two cents

That's really informative. http://www.mnr.gov.o...L02_165364.html It's really difficult getting a straight answer out of these laws. The Quebec site isn't a great deal clearer. I would recommend sending a message to them to ask about it. Best of luck hunting.
