Yesterday I found an unusually large snail in the Connecticut River, can anyone ID it?

Looks like an oriental mystery snail (Cipangopaludina sp.) to me. They have been introduced up your way.

You are both right: Japanese/Chinese mystery snails = Japanese/Chinese trapdoor snails = Cipangopaludina japonica and C. chinensis. They are in the family Viviparidae (livebearing snails), NOT in the Ampullariidae (egg-layers) like the common S.Amer mystery snails usually sold in fish shops. They are extremely invasive and are now "prohibited" in NC and possibly other states.

i make sure to step on them when i am out, well not ALL of them, but quite a few as the darters/shiners then pick at the flesh
