What is a good method for sexing three spined stickle back when they are not in breeding conidtion? Are the females more heavey set with the males being thiner?

(Females are not more heavy set/ deeper-bodied than males except during breeding season.)
Our lab uses genetics as the only absolute method of accurately sexing G. aculeatus, unfortunately! Outside breeding season, they are tricky to sex due to high variability in phenotype/ body shapes among populations.
