Southern Indiana trip

I'm looking into setting up a trip in Southern Indiana on June 30th OR we can push it back to July so we have more time to plan, either way.

Any thoughts?

The best spot I know of around the area is Blue River. I've had a hard time finding other suitable sites, although I've only tried a few surrounding areas around me.

Looks like it’s going to come together on Saturday June 30, 2012, and want to get an early start. We are planning on sampling darters on the Blue River, and then moving closer to Evansville to sample orangespotted Sunfish & Redspotted Sunfish. Hopefully we can get some Flier Sunfish & Pirate Perch too.

If there’s time we can add Hovey Lake for Gar & Bowfin.

Well it was a good trip, but extreamly hot. This is my first report so any pointers would be appreciated.

We met at the Comfort Inn in Corydon IN. Only three participants: Dr. Jim Wetzel, PJ Arant, and myself Mike Berg.

Then we proceded to the Blue River, and encountered a lot of diversity. Also found what might be an un-described Crayfish according to Dr. Jim Wetzel. We also found a large walking stick in the middle of the river, we put him on shore. Then we moved on to the Patoka River NRW and Management Area, and sampled two locations. The water level was extremely low, but with the help of beaver dams we found the second place to try. I was amazed by the number of Grass Pickerel in the area, I never saw dozens at the same time before.

The equipment we used was a seine net, a dip net, and rod & reel.

I see now I need to wipe off the photo tank better next time. Also I would pick a cooler day, it was 104 degrees.

Here are the fish we encountered at the various spots:

Not for sure, but you might have some young Hiodon there as well. Maybe, both species.

Bumping this. I would like to hear an opinion from someone who is better at ID than myself, on photos 11, and 20. I may be missing something obvious, but I am curious as to what these fish are. My first though was Juvenile Hiodon, but I am not familiar with them. I have only seen a few adults. Anyone?

While I don't believe my ID skills are any better than yours, I'm uncertain what the silvery minnows are. The last one looks like a luxilus and the upper fish looks ???. It's hard to tell....light bucket, squeezed a bit hard and sweltering summer heat can make ID a bit difficult on such fishes in my opinion.

If you held a gun to my head, and never told me the habitat from whence they came, I'd say Lythrurus and Luxilus. But you know, people will say anything with a gun to their head

Thanks guys. I am focusing so much on these eyes. They seem huge! May be a function of size, over squeezing like Uland mentioned, or just the photos themselves.

I can't speak for 11 but I would absolutely agree that 20 is a Luxilus

Number 11 ID was Scarletfin Shiner Lythrurus fasciolaris

Number 20 is a Striped Shiner Luxilus chrysocephalus

I thought the top ones eyes were big too, and kinda slim, but I am not good with minnows. They were ID'ed in the field by Dr. Jim Wetzel, & PJ Arant, and they seemed pretty confident about the ID.

It was hot 104* but they were not squeezed tight enough to make the eyes get bigger, only enough to hold them in place. The fish were released & did not turn up floating later.
