The US FWS has announced a Candidate Conservation Agreement with a big landowner (3200 acres) to protect necessary habitat for the Spring Pygmy Sunfish in Limestone County, Alabama. The Land Trust of Huntsville, a local nonprofit, is charged with annual monitoring of the terms of the agreement. Basically, the landowner has agreed to this in exchange for not having stricter conditions imposed if the species is (finally) granted status under the Endangered Species Act, if the terms of the agreement are met. The annoucnement of this can be seen at

Thanks for the post Bruce. This is an exciting step in the right direction. Let's hope politics don't get in the way of a long term solution for this species.

Is anyone within NANFA requesting a copy of the agreement?

I'm not sure, but it can be downloaded from the Federal Register. Admittedly I haven't had a chance to read the whole shebang myself yet.

I thought from what I read, you have to request a copy from the FWS.

I think that means they will mail you one if you ask, to make sure that anybody who's interested can get a copy whether they have computer accees or not, or if they have trouble finding or downloading the online document.
