I currently have a 20 long tank set up for a few species of darters and red-bellied dace. I keep a few stone rollers in the tank in order to keep the algae from becoming a problem. The drawback is that they eat a very large amount of reasonable expensive food, bloodworms. I would like to substitute their diet with some algae or plant material to cut back on what I have to feed my fish, not to mention helping the other fish get a bit more to eat.

Do stone rollers consume native plant species? If so what is an easy species to grow? Would stone rollers consume any vegetables scraps or other form of plant material? Is there a species of algae that can easily be cultured?

Thanks for the help.

If they're eating bloodworms now, you could culture grindal worms as an alternative. Replace meat with meat, not with plants.
My grindal worm cultures cost $8 in dog/cat kibble a year to maintain. The initial setup cost is the price of a plastic shoe box, borrowing someone's drill to make air holes in the lid, and a pack of chemical-free dollar store sponges. I have four of these shoe boxes and they provide enough worms for all of my (five) fish tanks. Instructions are in post #55:

You could regularly collect algae covered rocks from local streams.

Try some small pieces of earthworms
