I found this snail in sluggish backwaters of the Kankakee river valley in Indiana
What is it?

The best answer I can give you is that it is a Pleurocerid snail. If I could see more detail than the dorsal shape, I may be able to key it, but this really isn't my forte. Snails are so easily collected, I'm saving that for right before birds (people have life lists... I have life multi-taxa plans based on my waning youth ;)

I'm looking at some other texts to see if I can't get a better picture and poking aroud the web, which you could do as well, and start compiling a list of potential species. You'll see though that even the pro's have references to Elimia sp. (which is probably the genus these guys are in).

There's some nice inventories from the Illinois River, and I think there's a gastropod book for Illioins from INHS. If you run into primary lit you want but can't get, send me title and author, and I'll grab it. If is says JSTOR, I can get them, and a lot of these are since they're published in AMN.

Snails are tough, man. At least with Unionids, you have something larger to work with.

Todd
