That's one species that I've never really seen many of at the sites we're hitting. If we don't run into any, Tenmile Creek in Sylvania is much better for them, as is the lower Ottawa River. We can always take a couple hours and get them from there Nate.

Alright, well, I need 30 adult males.

I was hoping to find blacksides myself. I may want to accompany you to Sylvania. I don't want anywhere near 30, though, just a few.

That won't be hard to do Ed. Just Nate has a pretty tall order.

There should be no trouble seeing a few in the Maumee or the Blanchard but not 30 like Nate wants, so you should be able to get a couple on the trip Ed.

Sorry to be a blackside hog, but I have to get my fish for my project. This thing needs to get done by the middle of next month. Ed, you can have all the females you want, as I only need adult males. In fact, I think I may have a few females I can give you.

Also, I think a few people from the BGSU Marine Lab are coming too, I mentioned it to them and they seemed interested.

Yeah I picked up a few more people too. One will be with us on Sunday, hopefully Jeffro can be with us on both days. I'll put both benches in my van. We should try and carpool as much as possible, and perhaps expect to grab cars from Findlay before we head to any Maumee sites. There will be great parking there. I think the Outlet and Canoe access roadsides are what I'm mainly concerned about too many vehicles. Maybe we can even park at Riverbend for that portion of the day. If Brian would like to go to Riley Creek, there's good parking there.

I'm not familiar with that creek, is this the one you mentioned a while back that has least darters and creek chubsuckers? Anyways I'm not too picky about the Ohio spots I have been to most of them and just volunteered to show others around.

Yeah. Will be a repeat of most species and Tenmile on Sunday is the place to get least darter (although the orangethroats at this site are insanely large). So long as we get Steve in the field for the article in the morning, I'm happy. We could collect our vehicles and head to the mainstem or the Portage or something else of greater interest.

Aren't we likely to see least darters in the natural lakes in MI as well? I know the one time I got in a lake up there they were everywhere! along with Iowa darters blackchin shiners and brindled madtoms. The madtoms I was scratching my head about though because I have never seen brindleds in a lake anywhere else, only tadpole madtoms in lakes.

I checked the weather report and at this point (we all know how these change) they are calling for mid to upper 50's and only a 10% chance of rain both days, looking good so far. The only concern I have is wen-fri they are calling for 30-40% chances so lets just all hope for not too much since the streams around here are already up. I would say though at this point I would not call this off even if we do get a lot of rain we can deal well enough with the high water. Don't you agree Todd? At times in this area I almost think you see more of some species when the water is high than when it is at a normal level, you just modify your sampling methods to fit the situation.

The lakes I had planned on attending are dominated by iowa darter (of the two). However, we can get least by the bucketfull in my thesis sites on the way home. I really don't think it's worth us going out of our way to get least at Riley. In fact, it's probably a better deal to get to Weir, conditions permitting, because there are oodles of tadpole madtom and other more desireable fishes there, including logperch and suckers.

As for calling off... Worst case scenario is that we fish marshes in Ohio and lakes in Michigan. We can also always go to the upper Huron where the river is more of a straight than a river, with all the lakes absorbing the surface volume and avoiding flash conditions. So I say it's a go regardless.

These are the gauges to watch. The pulse already went through the Blanchard, the Maumee is up, but at 6.0 above stage, it's actually EASIEST to work, believe it or not. The fish relate more to the sides, and you can catch some weird stuff this way.

Blanchard:

Lower Maumee:
http://waterdata.usg...wis/uv?04193500

River Raisin:
http://waterdata.usg...wis/uv?04175600
(Look at that hydrograph! Why can't they all be like this!? Pulses are in 1/10ths of feet!)

Huron River:
http://waterdata.usg...wis/uv?04172000

St. Joseph:
http://waterdata.usg...ite_no=04178000
(the water gets out of there fast, mainly influenced by the crapped up Clear and East Fork. West Fork is where we'd like to go)

I'd like a couple pretty males and a couple females. Hopefully there will be plenty to go around. Just the same, if there are not, your school stuff will take priority. We have to work together to satisfy each other's wants/needs. If there aren't enough, there will be other opportunities for me.

It's starting to sound like it will be crowded.

Okay, what do you guys think about this?

Steve is going to talk to us a bit before we head out. So what I am thinking for Saturday is a "Drop Dead Departure" of 9:00.

Now, we're going to be there at 8:00 to talk to him. But I thought this would help you guys coming from Canton and Cinnci, etc.

Ed, I'd still come up on Fri night. Findlay is another 40 minutes from the turnpike/I-75 exit.

How does this sound? Anyone, of course, is welcome to join us at 8:00.

The meeting place is still the Mc's Lounge on the east side of I-75 at US 224.

Hope to see you out!

Todd

Hey guys, unfortunately I am going to have to sit this one out on account of vehicular troubles.

So please do not post any pictures or reports that will make me regret missing this any more than I already will.

Unfortunately, it would appear that I have to cancel my participation in the Maumee River trip this weekend. I was already concerned with the cost of the trip, being on the last full weekend of the month. I get paid monthly, on the last business day of the month (next Friday, the 30th, this month), and this time of month I am usually tapped out. When Debbie finishes nursing school at the beginning of May, things should look a lot better. Right now she's hardly working and has meager paychecks. So for now, I'm looking at a tough March and April. And now it seems that some medicine had to be purchased, which killed my March budget and depleted my travel funds. There is not even enough money for Turnpike fare left, much less enough for gas and a one-day Michigan license. Major bummer.

Good luck and have fun. If, on the other hand, you get rained out (it's supposed to rain the next three days), I believe I could easily make it next weekend, since I get paid next Friday.

Matt, I see you can't make it either. Maybe, if you're interested, we can run up there sometime soon after I get paid and your truck gets fixed!

Geese you guys are dropping like flies! is anyone on the board still planning on coming other than us locals to the area (myself, nate, and todd)? I think the show will go on because we do have some non-board users coming along but for those that can't make it I'm always willing to go out so any time a few of you want to come up I'd be glad to take you out.

I really wish I could make it, but some rather major work on my truck got rescheduled for next week. Was supposed to happen this week, and I would have a roadworthy vehicle for this weekend. If by the slight chance that the rains make it neccessary to reschedule my outlook for next weekend is much better.
Anyway good luck guys, can't wait to see some photos.

Sorry I have been missing for a while. I have been super busy lately with all my school work, sports, and work. I think I am going to have to miss this one guys I am really sorry. I really wanted to go but I have way too many things going on this weekend to spare any time plus I dont have any money for the gas  . Thank you for the invite though and keep me updated on the planned trips and I will try and make one soon.

Chad
