Just thought I'd let those of you who are interested know that the family and I will be moving to Canberra sometime in February (after 18 years in the US). I have a new postdoc at the Uni of Canberra looking at bioregionalization of the Murray-Darling Basin based on genetic patterns across a fish (smelt), turtle, shrimp and yabbies (or at least that is vague plan!).

One thing I will miss the most is being able to attend NANFA conventions! Those have been one of the highlights of my time here. Who knows though, we might be back another day though.

Cheers
Peter

You'll always be a NANFA Fellow and welcome to find your way back to the conventions. We always appreciate having overseas members but this is not my favorite way to get them. However, through the benefit of the internet you can still hang out with us "here".

I wish you well Peter.
Maybe some of us can visit YOU!
I would be nice to roast a land lobster.

Well of course, anyone is welcome to visit! There just aren't a whole lot of reasons to visit Canberra though vs other parts of Australia!

Cheers

Isn't there an Australian equivalent to NANFA? How about Peter becomes ambassador between organizations...

Yes, there is, ANGFA, Australia and New Guinea Fishes Association. It's a very similar club in lots of ways except that the regional groups are more formally organized, but that is because everyone in Australia lives in one of 5 cities, all of which are somewhat distant from one another. The national organization mostly deals with publishing their magazine, the regional groups arrange regular meetings, smaller newsletters and conventions.

You'll certainly be missed here. I know that I've enjoyed collecting with you over the years.
I assume that you won't be here for the Raliegh workshop weekend.

Safe trip

Wont' be here for the workshop I'm afraid. I've been collecting with various nanfa folks over the last 18 or so years, lots of great memories and experiences.

And if Canberra is on your bucket list, or you just want to visit, feel free to drop in. Not many rainbows in that part of the world, but I'm sure we could find lots of Gambusia though to make you feel at home!

Cheers
Peter

BTW...
How did the muck covers for your distant uncle's sheepfur car seats work out?

I was wondering that too...

I got some disposable plastic car seat covers from a mechanic and they worked very well! It was a great suggestion. You can buy them in bulk, but 250 car seat covers is more than a life times worth!

Sounds like a NANFA auction item(s)... send Nixon the details so he can start working on the spin.
They gotta be fairly thick plastic... something to deflect briars, twigs and sticks caught up in one's waders.
Knowing you, you might need to take a few along for the airplane seating.

um, I've seen plenty, but still I would love to visit. Can I go camping without risking death?

Not really. I mean thousands of people die every year camping in Australia. It's extremely dangerous. You're much safer camping with bears, ticks, cotton mouths and poison ivy here. Those things don't cause any harm right? :D/

Bears, ticks and cottonmouths I can handle. Poison ivy I cannot.
