Does anyone know if there is a site with native plants for sale? Living out in a semi arid part of the country, I haven't had much luck finding suitable plants for my 30gal stream tank. Got a couple from a local spring creek (not good at IDing plants), and one has sent runners in all directions, but the leaves seem to curl and look unhealthy. I believe the water is too warm at 70F. The other has done a great job of growing straight up, but not out. I don't wish to trim the tall one since all the new growth is at the top. So that's a lengthy way of asking if there is a place to purchase native plants that are more suitable for a 30gal tank or would anyone have any cuttings that they would like to contribute to my native tank project?

Thanks for the help.

The shorter one with runners.

Be careful. Before I would pull any plants I would make sure I could ID them. Not saying those you have are but there are protected plants also (not just fish). That being said if you are looking for North American varieties ( I assume you are) there are a number of varieties that can be found on Aquabid. You may have to do a bit of investigating to make sure they are from North America. I have had good luck with the person that has this website: http://shop.planteda...ral.com/main.sc

Try this: http://www.azgardens.com/

You have to look through the plants to see where they are native to, but it's the only place I've found.

I have some native species. Currently I have:
Myriophyllum pinnatum
Ludwigia repens
Ricciocarpus natans
Caulerpa prolifera (saltwater)
Potamogeton crispus (this one is technically a noxious weed, but it's also the only one I actually collected from the wild. The one thing I found in my local river was an invasive species. Go figure, right?) Also, I have only like a single stalk of this one. It doesn't like 75 F water too much.

For $10 I can ship any/all of the above anywhere in the US.

Ken, although my plant knowledge is lacking, I fortunately recognized the few aquatic/semi-aquatic species that are endangered in western South Dakota. Mostly sedges and semi-aquatic wetland species. These are fully aquatic species from spring fed streams that don't match any of the descriptions on the endangered/threatened list, but it is definitely something I should be mindful of. That also brings up another good point, I should probably look up regulations for shipping non-native (to SD) aquatic plants into the state for aquarium use.

Erica, I might be interested in some of your plants, minus the invasive. Once I look into state regulations, I will send you a message.

And thank you for the information about the websites. Those will give me a good place to start.

Oh, yeah, no, I can't ship that. It's illegal. I guess I included it in the list of what plants I have unnecessarily, whoops.

Sorry to interject, but has anyone else found good sources of native plants for sale? I am specifically looking for Elodea canadensis, and the only online retailer I have found seems to be Carolina Biological. They are currently sold out and as there are no other items I would be interested in, shipping will be quite high.

Thanks in advance. I am trying to stay away from exotic invasives, which is quite difficult with aquatic plants.

Have you searched http://www.aquabid.com/ ? The vendor Aquaman30 seems to have some for sale. Maybe if you private message them they'll sell you some.

I have plenty of E. canadensis in an outdoor tub, originally from Glade Spring VA (our 2011 VA conference). Be glad to send you some, if you dont mind the green thread algae all over it, and probably some Najas guadalupensis mixed in.

I must have missed that seller on Aquabid. Thank you for the pointer, Erica, perhaps I will see what he has. I swap pretty regularly with a group of aquarium enthusiasts near me, but I don't think any of the plants we have been trading are native to North America.

Gerald, thank you. I sent you a PM. I don't mind algae or Najas at all. Most likely, I already have both in the tank. ;) I am so very excited. I thought I was going to have to go wading into ponds to look for this myself, and frankly I'm terrible at field work of any kind.

Yeah, I wish there was a dedicated native plants vendor in the U.S. I am finding that I want to have more native plants in my tanks. I currently have Hornwort, Vallisneria americana and Sagittaria subulata, which are all doing great. I am also trying to start some Arrowhead and Water Arum from seed, though these are not fully submersed. Having a little trouble starting the seeds as they require a cold moist stratification period, which I haven't gotten right yet. But I'm trying. the Arrowhead and Arum seeds came form Prairie Moon Nursery (www.prairiemoon.com.)

I will gladly send you a box of plants, BUT unless you're in a wheelchair we're going to have to do something about that fear of wading into ponds and creeks. Maybe this spring you can join some other CT folks for a field trip. We'll let you start off easy, as bucket-carrier on shore ... |:>)

I went on a spider collection trip once, got attacked by furious bees on day one. Oh, and then there was the time I went wading in Long Island Sound and ended up with hundreds of tiny red bumps on my feet. Let's just say that I get the feeling that nature is trying to tell me something.

I could totally lug buckets, though.

It's much more fun in groups.

I am also a nature-leery person and can say first hand that it's a totally different experience going out collecting with Gerald and other natural-nature-lovers than it is going out with just you and one or two of your city dwelling friends. With a big group of 15 people it's more like a party than a punishment.
