I'm just wondering if there exists any spreadsheet (microsoft excel) file
that list all the US native scientific fish name with the common name?
Thanks.

Admittedly, not an Excel spreadsheet but as close as you're likely to get.

If that checklist could separate the information with a common delimiter, it would be easy to use the "text to columns" feature in excel.

So instead of this:
Atractosteus spatula (Lacepède 1803); Alligator Gar

Do it like this:
Atractosteus spatula, Lacepède, 1803, Alligator Gar

Well, yes, but that's not the standard format for nomenclature.

I imagine some thoughtful individual can write a macro to do the job.

True, but it would help if the list were consistent. For example:

Ichthyomyzon bdellium (Jordan 1885); Ohio Lamprey
Ichthyomyzon castaneus Girard 1858; Chestnut Lamprey PROPOSED SPECIAL CONCERN (Canada)

The first line could be delimited with "(" and then with ");". The second line would be a lot trickier because it's missing the parenthesis. If it were changed to this it would work.

Ichthyomyzon castaneus (Girard 1858); Chestnut Lamprey - PROPOSED SPECIAL CONCERN (Canada)

Then you could delimit first with "(", second with ");", and lastly with "-".

Some thoughtful individual might ask Chris Scharpf if he already has it in table format, which seems likely.

Actually the parenthesis have a specific meaning in scientific literature. I cant remember right now the exact meaning, but it is something like if the fish was first described by someone by using a different name, then the parenthesis are used. I asked this question when I first started my type locality project and was looking up all the original descriptions and stuff... it is here somewhere on a thread... but easier to let one of the folks that use the terminology all the time jump in and correct me.

You learn something new every day!

In that case, it would be nice to add a link on the checklist page that downloads either an excel file or a tab delimited text file.

Found the old thread, just in case you are still curious.

Yes Michael, thou art correct about the parentheses. Maybe a space could be used as the delimiter? I've never tried to do it that way, but maybe it would work.

Although it's not a spreadsheet, AFS has posted the list of names used in the 2013 edition of 'Common and Scientific
Names of Fishes from the United States, Canada, and Mexico', and it can be found at http://fisheries.org..._fish_names.pdf

I'm a bit late to the party.....but I recently completed an Excel spreadsheet based off of the NANFA checklist for my own use. I'd be happy to share if others were interested. I'm sure there are errors in it (I haven't checked).

Basically, I have a heading for each family, then the scientific name and common name in separate columns. Things like EXOTIC, ENDANGERED (Mexico), etc. are lumped in with the common name at the moment.

I've had some interest in this file via PM. I can't figure out how to share it as a download on the forum, so I've shared it from my Dropbox account.

Here's the link: https://www.dropbox...._checklist.xlsx

If anyone notices errors/omissions, I'd love to hear about them so I can correct the spreadsheet. I was using some quick and dirty tricks to pare it down quickly, so I expect I changed some things I shouldn't have!

That excel file is awesome! Thank you for sharing it. I've been planning to make one like that but dreading it. I'm going to add threatened and endangered (federal and states) info to it. If it's OK with you, I'll reshare it here and perhaps also on my site (moxostoma.com).
Thanks again. It's saved me a lot of tedious work.

I ordered "pickeral" off the menu at a restaurant in Winnipeg, Manitoba last week.

After a great deal of animated discussion with my Canadian co-worker, it turns out it was Sander vitreus vitreus, or what we in the States would call "walleye". But don't try telling that to a Manitoban. 8-[

I later commended the size of a fine northern pike in a picture by another co-worker, who corrected me that was not a pike but a "jack".

I haven't updated any species since February 2014, but I recently re-did the layout of my Excel sheet. If anyone is interested I could share it again. I've attached a screenshot of the format I have it in right now. I'm not 100% sure of the taxonomic order, but checking that is low on my current priority list.
