Seems like you don't attend ISU, but I'm right up your alleyway. I might have more to say later but I saw this post while working on other things. Welcome to the forum, nice to see someone else from central IA!
I graduated from Iowa State in '06 and still live in Ames very near campus.

I have a special fondness for Iowa because that's where Aqualand Pets Plus is based. They have great pages, like these:
Fathead minnow: http://aqualandpetsp...ead Minnows.htm
Green sunfish: http://aqualandpetsp...ls, Sunfish.htm
Longear sunfish: http://aqualandpetsp...ear Sunfish.htm
Najas guadalupensis: http://aqualandpetsp...Plant,Najas.htm
You have a lot of neat species local to you. Iowa's in the middle of the range of some great fish, like etheostoma spectabile and lepomis humilis.
Orangespotted sunfish (lepomis humilis)

Orangethroat darter (etheostoma spectabile)

You also happen to be in the right range for potamogeton richardsonii. I've been making this request for years but I might as well repeat it here. If you find any Richardson's pondweed while you're out collecting, let me know. It's so pretty.

Man I'm sad I didn't get some before I moved to North Carolina (outside its range). I got all excited when I was in the Dan River last summer (this was before the spill ) and I found some potamogeton crispus. For a second I thought I'd found p. richardsonii. *sighs*

Welcome to the forums! I concur with Orangespotted, it is nice to see someone else from central Iowa as most of us (including Scott who Casper refered to) are in Eastern Iowa. As Erica pointed out we do have Etheostoma spectabile in Iowa but be aware that they are protected here.... they cannot be collected. On the other hand Etheostoma caeruleum are quite plentiful and hardy if darters are a fish you are interested in. Iowa does have a variety of some nice fish here that can be kept in the aquarium. In fact Orangespotted and I are in the planning stages of doing some exploring around your area. I have sent you a message......

This is the aforementioned Iowa Scott. I am in Davenport freezing. I am up for collecting in the spring and the convention this summer.
Sounds great! I've touched base with Ken and Orangespotted. I think we're planning on some collection trips this spring/summer around the Ames/Des Moines area on the weekend sometime.
