We have several banded pygmies mixed in with Lepomis spp. currently being quarantined. Spawning appears to be going on over bare bottom. Male pygmy sure seems to do a lot wiggling with pelvic and anal fins as he displays in front of females. Behaviors overall not all that different from typical sunfish except a lot more leading and no digging.

I would be interested in watching a video if you could capture one. I've never seen a banded pygmy sunfish spawning dance.

With Elassoma the whole body moves up and down, like a dolphin jumping, but staying in one place; I don't think Lepomis do that. Usually the dorsal and anal are spread and folded in synchrony, while the two pelvics flick forward and back alternately (one goes forwrad while the other goes back).

Check western dollars. Strong vertical component to their courtship, especially when compared to sympatric longer. Redspots also do vertical when nests in heavy vegetation.
I am seeing the alternating pelvic fin movements. Females not have obvious signals like Lepomis.
