Kind of odd timing, but my dominant male just fanned out a nest in the tank. I've also noticed that the female seems to be carrying eggs. Is there a "typical" period of time between nest-building and actual breeding, or does there seem to be a lot of variance? I've been watching this tank quite a bit for the last few days and it's obvious that she's not ready, although he's really (naturally) pushing the issue.

Usually nest building begins about 24 hours before actual egg deposition.  Watch for female eye coloration and barring.  Are you noticing any changes?  Make certain she can easily avoid his advances.  If practical consider placing a partition of sorts into tank that she can hide behind and possibly control interactions.

I'm not seeing any changes in her coloration, but looking at her today, she's obviously full of eggs. She has a spot to hide out in to get away from him, although she seems to be checking the nest out a little bit.

Watch for changes in how she orients her body when male approaches.  That coupled with coloration changes can be very informative about reproductive inclinations of a fish.
