ID help, western KY

Found this fish dipnetting a small creek about 2 miles upstream from where it enters the Ohio River in western KY. It was around 4-5 inches long underneath a root wad in an area of slow water flow, probably about a foot deep. In hindsight I had caught several earlier in the month probably only an inch or so long but had attributed them to juvenile green sunfish. Seeing a larger version now I am not sure what it is. Thoughts?

I believe you have a Aphredoderus sayanus (pirate perch)

Have to say I feel comfortable calling it an A. sayanus, too, but that head and mouth shape does seem a little off from what I'm used to. It must be the angles of the pictures, but the head and mouth in particular seem smaller and rounder than normal...

I guess since Martin is becoming a Regional Rep and will have to behave like a big boy now, somebody has to take over as Chief Clown & Troublemaker.
Why would you say this Centrarchid? it is obviously a pirate perch.
Edit: Unless maybe he's working on a taxonomic project splitting pirate perch into multiple species ???

Things have been slow here for a while. At least with the stuff I like. I decided to toss a rotten egg on the dance floor to see who would notice. The fish is most likely a Pirate Perch. OP better not loose interest in one of the worlds coolest fish species.

Centrarchid, I know you have done a lot of work with pirate perch over the years. Is there any plan to split them up? This fish is obviously a pirate perch, but I have never seen the horizontal striations that are obvious on this fish on the fish from the Atlantic slope, at least not that I can remember. I know they are highly variable in coloration, but this seems like this may be a similar delineation used for distinguishing eastern and central mudminnows.

Fish you have on the eastern seaboard are different from what we have west of the Appalachians. I am not in the loop on any genetic studies involving them. If someone does it they better include all the cavefishes, spring cavefish and swampfish in that study. I bet at least one cavefish is more closely allied to pirate perch than to other cavefishes.

Sounds good just let me know.
Most of my exploration has been in the small creeks of the Kentucky Lake/Clark's River/Paducah area not that far from the Ohio River. Still a novice at this but pretty good variety I've seen that I never knew was there. Nothing rare though as of yet.
BTW your KY Creeks website has been a good reference for me, especially the darters. Good stuff posted in there.
