online instructions for brine shrimp say the cysts need to be refrigerated, but it seems to me they are often sold unrefrigerated, do i need to buy them refrigerated, or is this only after the package is opened?

I keep refrigerated both before and after opening.  The metabolize a little while in cyst where low temperature slows that down.  Ideally we buy the stuff once per year so we try to stretch shell life as much as possible.  I also purchase from supplier where it is assumed not to have been sitting on a shelf for very long.

No, just vacuum packed in cans.  Most I get is is from Brine Shrimp direct purchased as case of 12 cans each containing 454 g of cysts.  Usually purchase two cases at a time.  The version we get is the premium grade.
