A friend and I spent the weekend in and around Lake Waccamaw. We only saw one Taillight Shiner and that was in a canal with the dip net. It was mixed in with E. Mosquitofish. We also found:

White Catfish

Longnose Gar

Bluegill

Warmouth

Redbreast Sunfish

Redear Sunfish

Bluespotted Sunfish

Pirate Perch

Eastern Mudminnow

Swamp Darter

Coastal Shiner

Golden Shiner

Taillight Shiner

Brook Silverside

That's a redfin pickerel.  Chain has a longer, more duck-like snout.  Taillight is one of my favorite NC shiners; right up there with fieryblack, greenhead, redlip, and crescent.  The Waccamaw boat ramp canal is the only place in NC I've ever seen them.  Using a 20+ ft seine, a group of us including Fritz hauled up hundreds (maybe a thousand) coastal and golden shiners with just a few taillights mixed in, 20-ish yrs ago.  Do NOT try transporting taillights in warm weather; they're almost like silversides in terms of stress-sensitivity.  You didn't catch any pygmy sunfish or golden-ear killies there?

Nice to see the upgraded phototank there Tim, how do you like it? Fritz and I caught a dozen taillights last year right at the boat ramp as Gerald described. No coastal shiners though, strangely that one still evades me. Where did you net the killifish? I've had bad luck in recent years locating them.

Nice haul, Tim! That Taillight is a pretty fish.

We did get Golden Topminnows in the canals. I didn't see pygmies this trip.

The phototank is a lot better. Coastal Shiners and W. Killies and Silversides are all over the dam area of Lake Waccamaw. The killies are in less than a foot of water to the right of the dam.
