Eastern NC is a big place, is there an area in particular that you will be visiting?

New Bern specifically, or places within 45 minutes of it.

The first place that comes to mind is the Croatan National Forest. It's about 10 to 15 minutes from New Bern down Highway 70 East. Species include flier, swampfish, blue spotted and banded sunfish, pirate perch, swamp darter, mosquitofish, redfin pickerel, and the ever-elusive mudsunfish. Around new Bern itself there are plenty of striped bass, redear sunfish, creek chubsucker, Banded killifish, and dusky shiner.

45 minutes to the east is Morehead City, where you will find many brackish and amphidromous species. Lately we have been finding tons of spinycheek and fat sleepers, as well as lyre gobies. The cold weather really slows down the marine fishes though.

70% of the fishes on this page were caught in the area:

Our regional rep is Gerald, and he can probably give you more information on sites to the west.

Croatan Forest also has lined topiminnow (Fundulus lineolatus), but oddly there's no Elassoma records there.  You might want to pick up Edward Menhinick's key to Freshwater Fishes of NC.  I think the Nat Sci Museum in Raleigh sells it cheaper than you can get it online.  For brackish & saltwater ID, Scott's NCfishes website is the best thing going.
