I have a 1.25" NBG housed in a 40-gallon breeder aquarium with two Neolamprologus brichardi of similar size to the NBG. The NBG is able to exclude the cichlids from part of the tank even though the cichlids team up on it and have much more effective teeth.

DO you keep your cichlids in normal local water? Is it exceptionally hard?

Water is hard, good enough for Rift Lake cichlids to breed readily. Bluegill here experience similar conditions where spring water is part of charge.

Will be interesting to see how the dynamic changes if the NBG outgrows the Fairy Cichlids.

It will, but at some point in the near future the cichlids will go into breeding mode before the sunfish can soundly whip them. Then sunfish must be pulled.
