I keep going back and forth between the Sand Shiner (Notropis stramineus) and the Mimic Shiner (Notropis volucellus) for my 20 Long MN stream tank. Both are native and both are found in gravely/sandy streams or rivers. I would like a bigger school of around 5-7. I really like silvery minnows with little to no black lateral lines. I’m leaning more towards Sand shiners. The other fish will be a trio (1.2.0) of Rainbow Darters (Etheostoma caeruleum), harem (2.3.0) of Johnny Darters (Etheostoma nigrum) and a like Male Orangespotted Sunfish (Lepomis humilis)

I like the shiners, but I myself went with mostly darters, blacknosed dace, 2 green sunfish, a stonecat madtom and a black lined shiner of some kind.

I think you'll like the darters. They are highly inquisitive and intelligent fish that tend to interact well with you.
