Does anybody know of a good place to find native aquatic plants (that will survive in a planted aquarium) in the Burlington, NC area? The Haw River runs through Burlington and Lake Mackintosh is very close. I just set up my first aquarium, a 40 gallon planted tank, and I need more plants. I'd prefer to find some nice local plants, especially if they have colors other than the usual bright green.

Thanks!

Not sure about your area, but try on sandy/muddy areas by the water. Usually most bodies of water have some plants near the shallows Good Luck!

I dont have any specific spot to send you, but shallow areas at the upper ends of ponds and lake where streams flow in are usually good places to find Ludwigia palustris, Callitriche heterophylla, Micranthemum umbrosum, and others.  Also try streams flowing under powerlines; the streambanks often get flattened out by construction equipment, creating broad shallow wetlands.  Exotic species are also common, especially Murdannia keisak, Myriophyllum aquaticum, Lysimachia nummularia, etc.  Some of what you'll find are emergent species that rarely do well long-term totally submerged.  Our local swordplant (Echinodorus cordifolius), Alisma, Saururus, Lindernia, Gratiola, Lobelia, and most of the other Ludwigia species besides palustris are all like that.  Coastal Plain area is much more diverse for true aquatic plants.
