I have a problem. It started saturday after I added water (the water level was low from evaporation) to my 55 gallon tank.
My longnose dace were gasping at the top and hanging under the surface head up. One died that day, one the next day. After that things seemed fine. Today they are gasping again. So far whatever this is it seems only to effect rhinicthys. Does anyone know what is wrong?

Low DO maybe? Do you have any sort of airstone or anything in?
Was the water you added dechlorinated before it went in?

No chlorine, it's well water. I have two bubblers in it, one I fixed yesterday.

Sounds like what Josh Blaylock has experienced. Sounds like Prime may be junk.

I don't think he used Prime, said no chlorine, water was from a well source (Do you still have to worry about chloramines in well water?) Maybe test your well water, I don't know if you can get a report from the city or anything like that for well water but they make chlorine test strips. But also test other things as well, ammonia...etc.
So you only had one bubbler going at the time of the new water addition? Perhaps that wasn't enough for a 55 gallon. Gasping at the surface sounds to me like a DO issue. I'd get as much air going in that tank as possible.

It does sound like low DO, which would be possible from a well. I would test the water as it's hard to say what's in well water.
