I recently stumbled upon this site and it seems like a great place to get some info. I am currently building a water garden in my backyard in Cincinnati, OH. I just finished digging and I started kicking around the idea of putting all native fish and plants into the pond. The pond measures about 15ft long, 6ft across and 32in down at its deepest point. I plan on keeping the fish outside all year round, it gets to around 95F in summer and down to 15F in winter. Fish native to Ohio would be preferred but any North American fish will do! A nudge in the right direction would go a long way. Any other general water garden construction/maintenance tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

NANFA Convention is just wrapping up. I'm sure one of our Ohio experts will speak up soon.

Welcome to the forum! I live near Loveland. A lot could be done with a pond that size. I suppose my first question is how you want to procure your stock? Collecting fish from local bodies of water? Purchasing from an online vendor, or maybe our local hatchery Jones Fish? Or combination of both?

I hadn't really thought about that but I suppose a hatchery would be the best option for me. I don't have any experience collecting fish and I'd rather buy local than online.

This should be helpful for some native fish. However collecting your own, I am happy to help, opens up a much wider array of interesting fish.

Make sure you scroll down and look at the non-sportfish as well.
