Ohio Minnow ID (New to Natives)

I have just recently gained interest in native fish. I have the Peterson guide and am doing okay with most groups but having difficulty with the minnows.

 

This one was from a tributary of the Mad River in Champaign Co. Ohio.  It was caught in a 3-4 ft deep pool just above a narrow riffle.

 

Also if you have any suggestions on books specific to central and eastern Ohio I'd love to hear 'em.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

 

 

Redside Dace

I am no expert but I would guess redside dace is a possibility here.

Tribs of the Mad have ton's of redside dace, I have found this particular population to be difficult to keep. Might do OK in the winter. But transporting them during warm months from this cold water system seems really rough on them.

The characters we're looking at to ID this one are:  large eye, large up-turned mouth, laterally-compressed body (flat side-to-side; not as round in cross-section as chubs), very small scales on front half of body, and pink on body just behind the gill.

That's surprising to me.  Must be the heat.  I collected six of them from the Mad near Zanesfield on veterans day 2015.  I still have all six.  I hauled them up to Toledo in aerated 5 gallon buckets. 

 

It was actually a pretty remarkable collecting trip overall though.  Hit the Darby for a Bluebreast   a Varigate and a Fantail, the Mad for SRBD and Redside dace.  I actually had Zero mortality for almost two years. The only fish from that trip I have since lost was my Bluebreast about a month ago. 

Well, I wish I knew what I have done wrong with them. I have killed many Mad River redsides. I think Brian Z had some trouble with them as well. Maybe my water, but it was easier to blame the locality. After 3 tries I gave up on them, and got them from another drainage. Glad you did well.

I got 6 or 7 from the upper Mad with Brian earlier this summer while we were looking for Exoglossum laurae to photograph. I only just lost 1 yesterday since then...have had them a few months.
