Anyone here trying micro-fly fishing?  I'm getting a tenkara rod and have some size 22 hooks I'm going to try to tie up.  Chris at Tenkarabum.com has some size 30s I might order.  Just wonder what others have done.

Chris would be the best to contact about it all. He's always been helpful and answered all my questions. I've considered trying it out but a seine net was cheaper and probably more effective. I think Ben Cantrell's blog would be a good spot to check too (bencantrellfish.blogspot.com). You might be able to contact him on his website. I think he's a member of NANFA and active on the forum, so he might even comment on this topic.

Ben, and Chris are very helpful. I think talking to them is your best bet.

I have a couple Tenkara rods, and I have used some extremely small midge patterns for local fish. Size 22-24 I think. Got them from Davidson River Outfitters. Probably easy to find online. Simple midge patterns are about all I would want to attempt on hooks that size.

It will work. 22 or 24 might still be too big for truly micro fishes. I would think you could just wrap a single layer of white thread on a tiny hook and be successful--no need for actual fly patterns. If it's small enough, then the only other requirement (in my limited experience) is that the micros can see it. You'll probably have to put a small split shot on the tippet, since any bead you could fit on a size 30 hook wouldn't add enough weight to counteract any current or get it to the bottom.

Try it! Make sure to take pictures of the flies (with something of known size, like a coin) and the fishes.
