Greetings NANF group.

Channel of the Wolf River in Central Wisconsin has these minnows by the thousands this year.  Are they too young to identify?

As they get larger they lose the gold color (egg sac?) and turn black

Likely not too young to identify, but up-close photos would be best.  I am nowhere near WI, but here in GA, if I were to net up something like that, my brain would automatically go to creek chub.  Of course, largemouth bass look like that at a young age too.

My May microfishing here in SE WI primarily brings in gravid creek chub, so that would be a good guess.

This is my first time seeing this fish, they look very special, maybe it is the smallest fish I have ever seen.
