Hello everyone,

So looks like it's time to introduce myself. To start, I am french (from France) and english isn't my first language, so I apologize in advance for my mistakes...

Actually, I am not really a newbie in the aquarist hobby (neither to biotope fish tank), as I have maintained exotic fishes for more than 15 years now. But I am new to north american native fishes, as I just recently moved from France to Québec. That to be said, I met some of the native fishes here and I am already found of them (especially darters, sounds like I am not the only one here !).

I am really glad that I found this association website, facebook and forum (a true goldmine !), and I look forward to learn and share with you !

Welcome aboard! I think you'll find plenty here to pique your interests in native fishes. I like all native fishes, but am especially fond of darters. I keep over 20 in my large tank with the species being rainbow, banded, Johnny and fantail darters. Very pretty, inquisitive and intelligent fishes. However, one must not forget the Lepomis family which are sunfishes and the Cyprinella family(carps and minnows). Bluegills, Longear sunfish, green sunfish, bass and so forth. These fish are also wonderful wet-pets. However, they do need good sized tanks.

Anyhow, yes, there's a bunch of info here to be mined on fish and how to care for them responsibly. However, if you have questions or need to ID a fish, please take a photo of it at the collection site and then release it and come back to catch a similar one again once ID'd. The reason is we do not want to inadvertently remove endangered, threatened or vulnerable animals from their habitat.

Again, welcome aboard!

Chris M.

Thank you for your welcome !

I'm impressed with the quantity and diversity of darters you keep !

I also like Cyprinella and already encounters some minnows here, but I still have trouble to identify them, so for now I just take photos for ID and release them. I'm also limited by the size of the tanks I have for now.
