Hello Everyone!
I'm new to keeping native fish, and I'm looking to stock a 37 gallon tank with fish from my local river/watershed: the Saugatuck River in Weston, CT. I'd like to have a piece of the river that is such a huge part of my life (as a rower) in my bedroom, and perhaps to take with me when I go off to college.
I'm open to any and all suggestions, though I have some very preliminary thoughts. I've always found golden shiners to be beautiful. I'd love to keep pumpkinseeds, though from what I've read here keeping more than 1 or fewer than 5-6 of these is not advisable, and for that larger school size a 55 gallon is recommended. Could I keep a healthy school in a 37 gallon tank? Will a single pumpkinseed get along with a school of shiners?
The tank has a fairly small footprint and is pretty deep, 30"x12"x22", which I suppose is not ideal, but it'll fit on my bookshelf and the Black Friday deal was irresistible.
If any of this seems totally out of the question for a novice aquarist such as myself, please let me know. I've kept freshwater fish successfully in the past, but it's been a while since then.
Thanks!
