Hey Steve,

According to Crossman & Holm 2005 (http://publications....4-436-2005E.pdf), "Adults reach sexual maturity in the first year of life in Wisconsin, but apparently only in the second year in Ontario." Couldn't find any info on size at first year, but I'd guess about 5 inches or so? I wrote a short paper on these guys recently, so I had the age info readily available. Are you attempting to breed them? I'm thinking about doing so myself.

They reach sexual maturity in their first year at a length of around 6 inches. I have had a successful spawn with a 6 inch male and a 10 inch female. I had two yearlings spawn at 6 inches a piece(they were offspring from my larger pair). They laid approx. 20 eggs. The eggs never hatched with this pair.
My first pair (the 6 inch and 10 inch) spawned twice in a two week period. They laid approx 200 eggs. I had 50 fry from them. Out of the 50 fry I had 7 make it to 4 inches. I got rid of 5 of them and kept a pair.
The temp in the tank was around 55 degrees fahrenheit from November to the end of January then I raised the room temp and the tank temp jumped to 60 degrees. The lights were on 10 hours through the winter until Feb. the 12 hours on.The P.H stays around 7.4 to 7.6,ammonia 0ppm,nitrites 0ppm,nitrates 5ppm, GH 15, and I don't know the KH. Weekly water changes of about 25 gallons were made. The tank is 135 gallons.
Also their was very little water movement. The tanks turnover was about 4.5 times and hour. the tank was heavily planted on one half. Plants included hornwort, elodea,a myriophyllum sp..lighting was a dual t8 48inch shop light 6500k. .I'm sure I'm missing something so feel free to ask. Oh,and the first spawn from the larger two was accidental. As this was a community tank with 2 longear subfish,2 black crappie,1 rock bass,1saugeye,1 creek chub,1 white sucker,2 carp,1 yellow bullhead, and a mottle sculpin.
