What is the smallest shiner, dace or minnow native to the midwest?
Also, what is the most colorful shiner, dace or minnow native to the midwest?

In most places on average the usual red shiner [in middle of NA] is one of the most attractive minnows whose male coloration stays on most of the time in the aquarium. Just be careful not to dump them into nonnative waters.

Someday I may clean the glass before taking photos, but heres redbelly dace from Kansas.

The red on the dace is definitely the brightest color Ive seen in a minnow, but the red shiners with their blue bodies and red fins get my vote as the prettiest. And their ability to survive nuclear fallout makes them a great choice for the novice aquarium keeper.
