Okay well for starters I live in Ontario so some of the species listed here aren't accessible. Right now I have something like 12 minowish fish, I think they are creek chubs from what I can tell, I also have 2 smallmouth fry around 1.5 inches long, 1 inch long rockbass and 1 blue gill and I will be getting a brown bullhead catfish soon. I am quite interested in owning some more strange species like crappies, gobies and suckers and many more but I have no clue where to get them or care for them. If someone knows where I can get them or if they know somewhere i can buy them that would be great if you can see any problems let me know.

First of all, what size tank do you have? Crappies, bullheads, and smallmouth all get pretty big.

Check out jonahsaquarium.com and aquaculturestore.com.

You might be able to keep them in a tank that size. Crappie get up to 20" and brown bullheads can get 18". I don't really know too much about smallmouths, but I'm pretty sure they get about 20". That's a pretty big fish. A 110 is too small IMO, but I'm not an expert at natives, so I'm not really sure how much space those fish are going to need.

I guess you already know your minnows are going to be eaten. You will have problems with the smallmouth bass eventually as they require a lot of room.

Im hoping to give my little minows more of a fighting chance by providing some good coverage and keeping my bass well fed. I was hoping maybe if I grow out my minows with the smallmouth bass they might not get eaten but that might just be wishful thinking. Do you think a smallmouth bass will fit in a 90 gallon?

No, the Smallmouth will get too big, and seem to like lots of space too. I would stick with the smaller sunfishes, Longears, Bluegill, etc. No matter how much you feed your Smallmouth, the minnows would be gone. They are eating machines.

I know it's possible for a crappie to reach 20" but I'd say it would have to have pretty elite genetics, even in a large lake with perfect forage/habititat. And honestly I don't think many would reach that size then. typically a 15-16" crappie is very abnormally large. I don't see one breaking 15" in an aquarium unless it has absolutely perfect accomodations. Even then though a 15" crappie is no small fish. Take account that in a lot of lakes/ponds there is a lot of inbreeding so I wouldn't count on it growing to 20 inches.

edit thanks irate :)

Oh, I dunno. I know that there are cichlids that get significantly larger in aquaria than they do in the wild. Probably other fish too. Remember, a good aquarium is darn near perfect conditions: good water quality, excellent food, nice temperature, consistent food, no winter semi-dormancy, etc.

I lived in Ontario from 1983 to 89 "Oshawa" and all I can say is the two P's, Pumpkinseed and Perch "yellow" would make a great show tank then throw some kind of dither fish of a size than cannot be eaten in there with them.

Of course I am speaking totaly ignorant of what laws might be in place up there now but explore. Leave the larger fish for the diner plate is my opinion. Given the chance to keep one bass in a ninety which may be too small a tank for him any way, or lots of smaller more exciting fish I would go with the group any day.
