Hello to all.

Tom Glassburner and I were talking about a Sunday trip in North East Ohio. We would try to sample several streams (Ashtabula, Grand) and also Lake Erie. I have access to a very large seine (I think a 100 foot) that we would use on a beach area on Lake Erie. I may be willing to organize this outing on Sunday August 19th IF we have enough committed participation. I am away from my family during the week (working) and only get to be with them on the weekends, so if I am going to plan an event on that Sunday I would definately need a committed group to do so.

To efficiently work a large seine we would need to have at least 10 (Adults) people. The drag on such a large net make pulling the net through the water seem like pulling a ton. I may also need to have a canoe handy to assist.

If you are willing to (99.99%) commit to the 19th please let me know on this thread, by Friday August 10th. Once I have a number of commited people Tom and I will start working out a plan. This will include overnight campling possiblilities if needed (Saturday Night). I am also going to check on ODNR regulations on seine limits on lake erie. I believe that there is not a limit on the seine size on lake erie and that you would just need a fishing license. I will check into all of this.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

I believe there was a seine size restriction for Lake Erie several years ago but the current fishing regulations state a seine of any size can be used.

Three of us worked a 100 footer in Lake Erie in 2004 at the end of a long trip. It can be done with less than 10 on a beach and we had broken concrete and rebar to deal with.

That was a 50 footer Matt. 100 footers require multiple lines off the brail. No one is tall enough to get any leverage on that much material.

You are right. It is a 50'x8' seine. It was bought in 2003 and has never been used. The last time I looked at it was when it came in the mail. So when you said that it was probably 50', I decided that I better pull it out of the box. It is ready to go except for some lines. I will have to get some lines for it. I don't have a scale but I have a fish measuring board for curiosity sake. It will still be fun to pull that thing through the lake.

The seining trip on the Ashtabula River and Lake Erie is a go for Sunday August 19th. I am going to start to plan out access for sampling sites.
I will have some, ODNR provided, "gifts" for those in attendance. I will have some stream posters, ID guides (fish, reptiles, birds) including the "Waterbirds of Ohio, Bird sound" CD.

Those who wish to come up on Saturday or earlier will need to contact Tom Glassburner (PM him) to let him know. He would probably be able to lead a couple trips on tribs to the Grand River.

Sunday we will have several spots on the Ashtabula river and Lake Erie. I will be working on access points. One of the access points will be to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History "Hadlock Preserve". We will also be accessing in Indian Trails. Indian Trails has 3.7 miles of river access.

Right now we have 3 NANFA members who will be in attendance (including myself) but I have also got the interest of several people who work on the Ashtabula Watershed Steering Committee (I will have NANFA membership information ready to hand out). Children are welcome to come. I will be bringing my 10 year old daughter and an OEPA person will be bringing his 15 year old daughter.

I hope to see you there. If you have any questions PM me and I will get you my office or cell number.

Excellent work! Wish I could make it. The thought of a net that large makes me very happy! Stomp a few gobies for me.

That would be great if others wanted to come, and there's still a week for others to opt in. But this will be the same weekend as the Illinois gar trip (if memory serves me correctly), and several potential participants who live within geographic range of this trip have probably already been planning on attending the gar trip. It would be nice if more would come, but we can have a good time ourselves one way or the other. This will be the first time children close to Holly's age (9) have come when she has, and hopefully this will make it even better for her, as well as for Matt's children (didn't he say he is bringing two?).

Oh, now I see, Matt's 10-year-old daughter and "an OEPA person will be bringing his 15 year old daughter". Are the OEPA person and daughter still coming?

I can't wait.

With those that have confirmed they are coming we can probably manage the seine, but more would be great.

Ed, AFAIK they will still be coming.

You all know you want to be there!!!!
Plus, if you want to come on Saturday you can camp for free at my place.

My office address is:

If you Yahoo Map the address it gets you really close.

Directions from Rt 45N;
Take Rt 45 north,
Cross over Rt 84 and RR tracks.
Turn Right (East) on Rt 20.
my office is a little over a mile on Rt 20 on the left. A white sign says 3441 building. Park in back.

Sights that we will visit:
Benetka Road Covered Bridge
Green Hill Road
Olins Covered Bridge (Dewey Road) & Haddlock Preserve (Cleveland Museum of Natural History).
Indian Trails (Ashtabula Township Parks) off of Tannery Road.
Lake Erie. (I will be scouting this week for one or two sights on lake Erie).

I will edit this post and attach some sight pictures as the week progresses.

If we have time, I have some other sights that we may visit.

Equipment that I will have:
4', 8' and 50' seines
possibly a tank.

If you would like to bring a seine or dipnet and any thing else feel free to do so.

Make sure that if you are going to camp over Saturday night at Toms, that you PM tglassburner this week.

I will PM those who are coming and give you my cell phone and email address. This should be a good trip.
See you Sunday.
