Can these two be kept together if they are of the same size?

You are really adamant about keeping pickerel with sunfish. :D But yes, I'm currently keeping one of each in a 38g (36x12x20) without any problems. I don't know what would happen with more than one of either. I do know that I couldn't keep 2 warmouths successfully in a 72G.

Lol. Well I was really asking for some one else since they may be getting some warmouths from me.

Do two warmouths really need more than 72g? If so, then I am WAY overstocking my tanks.

I had two in my 72G bowfront . They would constantly fight and harass each other until one of them died. I had read previous to this that you can't keep warmouths together unless given enough room. I didn't believe it and was proven wrong.

I feel the need to join the fray here. I'm fairly certain that the pikeral would leave the warmouth alone, but would the warmouth leave the pike alone. I feel that warmouth, in general, are less aggressive to non-conspecifics than other Lepomis sp. But, does the pike get a chance to eat in a tank with a warmouth? I assume feeders are being used to feed the redfin and the warmouth will eat most anything.

And just how big will an adult warmouth get in a home aquarium of moderate size, say a 55 gallon tank?

I have watched Drews warmouth and redfin eat and I can assure you the pickerel will hold its own. They are amazingly efficient and accurate predators whereas sunfish just seem to chase things blindly and miss half the time. Warmouths are very docile when it comes to other fish, as long as those other fish aren't warmouths too.

Drew, you need to post a couple pics!

Just my $2 worth (adjusted for inflation): I've been keeping a pair of redfins with three pumpkinseeds now since the beginning of June. I have them in a heavily planted 110 gallon tank and there are no conflicts.

The punkins like the pellet food although the redfins won't even give pellets a glance. All of the fish love to eat live feeders. What I have found shocking is the attraction redfins have for crayfish! They absolutely go bonkers for these. Now the punkins also like the crayfish but don't seem to exercise much common sense. A 4 inch punkin is not going to eat a 3 inch crayfish but that doesn't stop them from trying.

Interesting. I wonder if the redfins will go after crickets with the same ferver as they do the crayfish?

Oh. Well I've got about 7 in a 100 gallon pond, and they don't seem to show any aggression. Although it may be because I have so many in the pond that the aggression is more spread out. I also only have 2 males out of the whole bunch in there, so that may be another reason why.

My pickerel and warmouth eat the same food. That includes live (rarely feed them live), carnivore pellets, and raw market shrimp. As long as they are both active, they will both get food.

Get your pickerel off of live food. You'll be thankful.

Thanks for the info. I'll surely try to get the pikes off live food cuz I ain't into feeders. I will do what is best for the pike though.

I've started to add VitaChem to the raw shrimp before feeding.

I have some VitaChem already. I soak cichlid pellets in it fro time to time. This raw shrimp thing, do you buy a pound of it and freeze it and thaw out and use a little at a time? That would not be too expensive. I like feeding primarily prepared foods and giving frozen mysis shrip or bloodworms as treats.

I usually buy it when it is on sale. Since I only have two fish eating them, it isn't expensive for me. A pound lasts me a couple of months, and when on sale for $4-5/lb, it is cheap. But yes, I buy frozen shrimp (sometimes the thawed stuff) and freeze them in a ziploc bag. I cut it up into pieces and thaw and feed.
