there are big invasive Fundulus catenatus (Northern Studfish) in John Bryan State Park (8 miles north of Xenia, OH).

I was just at John Bryan Park today. It seems like it was all gorge and rapids there; not Studfish habitat at all. What location would you find the Studfish areas? In the park, or nearby? I did find four of them today (about) 15 miles south of there though.

Maybe you, Richard, could plan a Michigan trip? Maybe the Raisin?

Everyone,

Thats a possibility also... Raisin would be a good trip too..

I think that the upper Muskingum would be pretty great to sample.

I am not available on any Saturday, but I would love to just make one day of a two day event. I am getting pretty excited to meet many of the Ohio folks and get into some great waters.

I would really like to get a date that Brian would be able to go. I will have to get on the horn to start getting this thing going.

FYI
I was at Little Darby Creek at US41 north of I-70 in August. I was shocked by the number of Rusty Crayfish. The crayfish would pinch the seine; made it hard to toss them out of the way and back in the water. Many minnows were cut in half or had eyes pulled out. Population estimate: enough to feed a Boy Scout Troupe.

I have noticed this before as well in the upper parts of both big and little darby creeks and a few other places. It seems the nutrient level is quite high in late summer and provides optimal conditions for crayfish and they become extremely abundant in some locations.

Julie says you can all come hang out in the back yard in tents or popups or what ever you got for a weekend. We can provide a restroom but I don't want to have any motor homes pluged into the house. Air pumps for fish would be fine but we have a limited budget and can't be running up the electric bill too much. I guess it's up to the Matts if they want to accept this offer since they are the state reps but it seems we just need to set a date(s) and stick to it.

On a side note I was out on Friday and ran into the local park manager and got some great info about the Kokosig river. I'm thinking it would be fun to do a float trip and I think he may even have some extra canoes/kayaks available for use. There are a lot of great access points on this river which would make such an event quite easy. What are you guys thoughts on this?

Float trip on the Kokosing sounds like it could be one of the most interesting things you could do in Ohio. That river is really nice...good rapids, nice pools, top-notch diversity. On a float trip we could coast from riffle to riffle, and fish the pools for Smallmouth Bass, River Chub, or whatever else was biting. We could even bring snorkel gear (although May might still be too cold for my taste). My vote is for Kokosing all the way.

In the Park. Follow the trail that heads Northeast and then East from the parking lot (the lot with an outhouse building). Then down the stairs and straight into the Little Miami River.

p.s. I am interested in this trip. I will watch for the date.

New here but would be interested in joining. Where is everyone planning on meeting? I'm up near Cleveland.

Hi Thom,

You'll find them in any of the pools below high gradient areas. The Blue Hole pool is LOADED with them. Other good places to find them are in the two pools near the campground (esp the lower pool where the stream makes a sudden left). I've also seen great numbers down at the Glen Helen bridge.

P.S. they make awesome bait (hardy and last tons of casts) when the smallmouth are shallow and fiesty.

It's Official, both regional reps have agreed on the weekend of May 31st and June 1st. Saturday will be a typical collecting day driving around site to site (sites yet to be determined) and Sunday will be a canoe/kayak float trip down the Kokosing River. We are also inviting the Ohio Smallmouth Alliance to join us and the Kokosing State Senic River advisory Board. The exact details of the float trip are yet to be determined. Mohican State park is probably the closest state camp ground to the Kokosing for over night accommodations or like I previously mentioned you can camp out in my back yard. There are also hotels and Bed and breakfast type places for those who would like a little more comfortable accommodations in either Mt. Vernon or Gambier Ohio. Since we got this planned out well in advance I expect we should have a good turn out and it should be a great trip. Hope to see you all there!

I more or less got confirmation that the Senic River Coordinator for the Kokosing will be providing us with some to use. Plus if need be My grandpa owns several but his are often duck taped together so I think the DNR's will be a better option. I beleive Hector (the Kokosing manager) said they should be able to provide 8, so thats 16 people comfortably and 24 if need be. I have my own kayaks and I suspect there are others with boats that can be used as well.

Awesome! This will be a great time. How about a shuttle? Is there a canoe livery nearby? Often they will shuttle for a small fee. Or there is always the back of my truck.

I will most likely just camp at your place.

So who is in on this?
Matthew Smith +one - Tent?
Brian Zimmerman
Todd Crail
Matt DeLaVega -Tent
Ed Bihary + one-Tent
Tom Glassburner- Tent
So far......

Let us know if you plan to attend, and where you intend to stay. Reply here, but note that once you reply, I will be deleting your post, and adding your name to the above list. This will help to keep the thread less cluttered.

This event will be kid friendly. Remember that Ohio law requires anyone under 16 to have a life jacket on at all times while in a canoe. So, if your child is small, you should bring an appropriate sized life jacket. There also must at least be a life jacket in the canoe for each adult.

I'm definitely in, and depending on whether the organizers think this will be kid-friendly (for a 9-year-old), Holly will want to come too. I'll pitch my tent where most everyone else does.

Ed,

I will probably come down Saturday Night and I am planning on brining my 11 year old daughter. The girls should have fun.

I would be interested in going but it might conflict with me getting bit by many Lake Erie Water Snakes. So depending on the snake survey days I would like to try for the canoe trip. I would camp and would camp out wherever. (I also have a few canoes).

Great Andy this could be helpful and I'll keep it in mind but hopefully the Scenic rivers owned canoes do indeed work out for us and that should put us in good shape unless we have a very large turnout.

I do suggest though for those of you who do own their own cannoe or kayak to bring them along.
