Hi!
Just wanted to introduce myself to all of you. I have been keeping fish for a number of years, but never natives until about three years ago. It was then that I recalled catching small fish we called "Mud Puppies" in a small creek near my boyhood home in Columbus, Indiana. I started doing research on native fish and discovered the "Mud Puppies" were actually Sculpins. I went on a quest to find these little critters, and the more I made trips to the creeks, the more different species of natives I found. The more variety I found the more interested I was in finding out more about them...and so on, and so on. Needless to say, These fish hooked me! Now as often as possible, I go on collecting trips to Indiana (for Northern Studfish), Red River Gorge; Kentucky, and all over the place here in SW Ohio (Cincinnati area). I keep Brook Sticklebacks, Central Mudminnows, four species of Killifish, Red Shiners, several species of Darters, Blacknose Dace, etc.... I have also caught SRBDs, Longnose Gars, Mottled Sculpins, Brindled Madtoms, Warmouths, Pumpkin Seeds, Log Perch, Grass Pickerels, silversides(?), even a population of split tail wild goldfish, plus probably a bazillion others that I can't remember, or can't identify. Whew!
As is apparently common among native fish heads, I drive everyone around me crazy talking about them, collecting them, researching them, etc.... Nice to know there are a bunch of us weirdos out there!

Welcome to the forum!
Sound like you have had some great luck with collecting natives. A few of the ones you mentioned are some of my favorites (sticklebacks, pickerel, madtom, darters, etc.). Post some pics of the fish you can't identify (if you happen to still have the fish or a picture of it) and I'm sure it can be identified rather quickly.

Yes, welcome. I'm sure when Skipjack sees this, he'll be thrilled to see that he has a potential seining partner right in his backyard! You must come eastward toward eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania sometime as well (everyone!).

Yes I've seen Skipjack's posts and store info... could be interesting. In the spring I was going to travel eastward toward the Paint Creek and Big Darby area. Not exactly Pennsylvania, but I'll work my way that way eventually.

Yes I go to the Little Miami often also the Great Miami also many of their tributaries. In fact, the first place I tried was at the Little Miami cannoe launch in the park at Lake Isabella.

Thank you Steve, I'll keep that in mind. I jut got my computer back after months of fooling around with it. Turns out it was an I-D-10-T error (IDIOT ERROR). Anyway my pics were wiped out but I still have a few on my girlfriends camera. I'll see if I can download them this weekend.

That would be nice. Just went up to Spring Valley Marsh, Turkey Run Creek, Little Miami today. This was the first time I found Northern Studfish in the Little Miami. Surprised to see them there, plus I figured they would occupy deeper water by now, nope right by the shore as usual.

Introduced poulation. The epicenter was Xenia. Did you dipnet in the marsh? In various areas you will find central mudminnow, and brook stickleback. My house is about 20 minutes from there.
There is a secret in Turkey Run. Did you find them? Please do not name the fish here.

I did not dipnet IN the marsh this time, just sampled in the little "ponds" between the "dam" and the bike trail. My favorite spot for getting Brook Sticklebacks and Mudminnows is around the observation walkway. More than you can handle there... I'll PM about the secret.
