Can anyone Identify this crayfish? I snapped these pics in the Red River Gorge area of Kentucky

Just for the record, if you live where there's more than a couple species and you don't get a picture of both the top AND a closeup of the underside, you might as well not even bother. The shape and ornamentation of form I males are some of the most useful characters in crayfish IDs. The pic below is about the minimum acceptable closeup to get a positive ID...

Crud! I can't get the other photos to load. None are of the underside though :sad:

. I'm not much of a crayfish guy. I was just curious, because it was so colorful. Not like any I had seen before. The photo is overexposed, so it doesn't really do the color justice.

Dave,

Thank you for giving the best example of a crayfish photo necessary to properly ID!!! I'm making a sticky about this shortly.

The crayfish you have is in the genus Cambarus and is a primary burrower. Some species I'm familiar with off the top of my head that are complexes in that region are C. dubius and C. monongalensis. I'll take a look at my KY book tomorrow in the office and show the picture to a few people but it likely is a specimen from that or a closely related group. There's 50+ species in KY so lots of diversity. If you could give me some more information about the location, like county, and any other pictures that would be great.

HA! I finally figured it out, My Attachment folder was full...The pictures were taken around the border of Powell and Wolfe Counties in East Central Kentucky, in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Northeast of Slade KY. It was not in the water, but on the side of a hill, near a burrow as I recall.

P.S. I had no idea there were that many kinds of them "crawdads" runnin' around!

truf, you're a NANFA member, you should have more storage than a regular member, your still not showing up as a NANFA member though.

It's not a C. thomai like I first thought (they have an obliterated aerola), the likely choice is C. dubius and somewhat C. striatus. Sorry but I probably can't make a 100% positive ID.
