Many years ago I asked the owner of an LFS if I could buy a box of the bags he used to bag fish for customers. The price was pretty reasonable. I just had to wait a week or two for the spare box of bags to arrive.

You're probably not going to get that treatment from Petco or Petsmart but try one of the mom & pop LFS's, especially if you're a known regular customer there.

I'm actually looking for the regular plastic bags not breather bags right now... and probably a little thicker than the typical petstore bags. Sorry should have been clearer in the original post.

I also sent this via PM.... http://www.jehmco.co...astic_bags.html

Not sure if they have the best price but I buy from this company regularly and figure I save on shipping by sticking with one source.

Ah those are nice and thick. Very nice. The first ones I found are rather thin.

So my wife was diggin around as well for me (I'm at work although not getting much done today) and she found a site selling them by 1000. I used about 300 or 400 this past year so it will be worth it for me to make a large order. Gets the price way down per bag and you can get nice thick 3 mil ones. This site actually has all kinds of shipping supplies... http://www.uline.com/ although the quanties might be unreasonable for many of you. The other plus is we might soon be offering some nice shipping bags to NANFA members at a slight profit to us but less than you could normally get smaller qauntities for.

You might want to consider the poly tubing at that volume. You easily cut to fit and seal the bags with heat with minimal waste. The poly tubes are also FDA approved.

You would need an impulse sealer for the initial seal (bottom). I've never tried to seal oxygen inside a bag and not sure that would work well. The place I work has this type of bag system and we buy from Uline. I would be careful about the 3 mil bags. I suspect they would be hard to keep leak free. You might need an insane amount of rubber bands to seal them well. I would also worry a bit about how much extra bag you'll need at the top due to the thickness of the 3 mil bags.

I have been using 3 mil bags for quite some time and using an oxygen tank rather than just air to fill them. I have not had trouble sealing them, I just double bag them. Fish, water, and O2 in first bag, 2 rubberbands to close it off, then put it in the second bag top down and then another rubberband on the second. This has had a higher success rate than breather bags. I have had a couple of shippments where those poped in transit and fish were lossed, not to mention it is usually less weight and in many cases more weight = more money to ship. There are a few species this does not work for, you can't use O2 with surface breathing fish like mudminnows, bowfin, and I would suspect pirate perch and maybe mud sunfish.

The tube might be a good idea but I don't think I would want to be sealing it if the sealing device used heat if I am filling the bags with O2. Results might be unfavorable with enough heat, not only for the fish but also for myself. I don't think you meant to seal the top with fish in it anyways, just to make the bag initially, but the thought still came to mind and I wouldn't want any reader of this to blow himself up trying to ship fish.

If you need just a few bags (20 or 30) you can beg them from Petsmart - they don't really mind. Otherwise buy 'em. Jonah used to sell 'em by the 100.

They charge the actual UPS costs only (no handling charges). If you can have them ship to a business, you will pay less for shipping since UPS charges extra for residential deliveries. below is the text from the JEHMCO website:

Shipping Overview
We ship primarily UPS Ground Service, with small orders (under 2 LBS.) usually shipped via US Postal Service - Priority Mail. We can ship USPS Express Mail, UPS Next Day Air, Second Day Air or 3 Day Select. Shipment by DHL or Fed Ex available on request. there may be associated pickup charges with FedEx however since they do not have regular pickups here. Most orders are shipped the same day they are received (remember we are on Eastern US time). Freight estimates are available for telephone orders.

We only charge the actual freight costs based on package weight, shipping method, and Insurance on high value orders. We do not add any additional handling or processing fees, you pay the actual Carrier rates. For receiving your shipment we recommend using a commercial shipping address if possible. This will save time and money on your freight costs, since UPS and other Carriers restrict delivery and up-charge rates for many residential addresses. “Rural Residential” addresses are charged additional fees by UPS, whereas all commercial addresses are charged a single lower commercial rate.
